Ivan Smalyukh wins 2013 Early Career Award from DOE, portrayed on the
Boulder Daily Camera together with his advisee and COSI fellow Angel
Martinez. University of Colorado Boulder faculty member and
COSI-IGERT advisor Ivan Smalyukh is among 61 scientists to receive a
2013 Early Career Award from the U.S. Department of Energy. The DOE’s
Early Career Research Program is in its fourth year. This year’s award
winners were selected from a pool of about 770 applicants. Because of
this recognition, he was portrayed on the Boulder Daily Camera together with COSI fellow and advisee Angel Martinez.05/31/2013 Professor Henry Kapteyn elected member of the US National Academy of Sciences. Professor
Kapteyn, from JILA and CU's Physics Department, has been elected member
of the US National Academy of Sciences. An active participant in the
COSI-IGERT since the beginning of the program, Prof. Kapteyn has been
the advisor of many students in the program. He was one of the first
faculty to present his research in the COSI Seminars (see video of his
presentation here). See the official announcement on the NAS website. Prof. Tom Cathey, Jr. recognized with the Joseph Fraunhofer Award/Robert M. Burley Prize. The
Joseph Fraunhofer Award/Robert M. Burley Prize recognizes significant
research accomplishments in the field of optical engineering. The 2013
edition of the award is presented to W. Thomas Cathey for seminal
contributions to the field of computational optical imaging and its
commercial application. Read here the official OSA news release. 4/15/2013 COSI@CU can now be also followed on Google+. Now the latest news can also be found in Google+, just follow COSICUB (https://plus.google.com/100315983731120896120/posts) and you will receive the latest information related to the program. New edition of The COSI@CU Newsletter is now available. The
March issue of The COSI@CU Newsletter fetaures information about the
upcoming COSI@CU Industrial Advisory Board and COSI@CU
Conference, a first person of a student's experience during his
COSI international rotation
in Europe, the announcement of the COSI representative for the 2013
IGERT Video & Poster Competitioin, and a listing of the March COSI
seminars and the latest videos on the COSI@CU YouTube Channel. The
March Newsletter is available at http://cosi.colorado.edu/Newsletters/2013-03. Registration to the 3rd COSI@CU Industrial Advisory Board Meeting and COSI@CU Conference is now open. This year, this two-day meeting
will be held in Estes Park, CO on March 28 and 29, 2013 and it will be
a great opportunity for everyone related to this field, including
company representatives, current and past students, and faculty, to
network and think about the COSI field and the future of this program
in a unique setting. The schedule, which you can find
bellow, will include among other activities, oral and poster
presentations by CU students and graduates, presentations
by company representatives and group discussion about different topics.
The most up to date information will always be available on the meeting website. To sign up, just follow the link to the meeting registration page. E-mail us to cosi@colorado.edu with any question, request, or suggestion you may have. 02/26/2013 COSI@CU launches its new newsletter. Called
"The COSI@CU Newsletter", this new communication tool will allow us to
improve the interaction with all the COSI@CU community, including
students, faculty, and academic and industrial partners. It reflects on
a monthly basis all the news related to the COSI-IGERT, such as
prizes, awards, graduations, grants, etc. The February 2013 edition was
sent out to all the cosi-news list recipients (send an e-mail to
listproc@lists.colorado.edu containing subscribe cosi-news
[your-full-name] in the text of the message) and can also be found
here. 02/01/2013 COSI@CU launches its new Youtube Channel. All
COSI@CU recorded seminars are now online for streaming to any
device with access to YouTube. The new seminars that will be recorded,
together with other featured videos, will now be uploaded as they
become available. The new COSI@CU channel could be found by
searching for "COSI@CU" at the YouTube searching box or simply
by following this link. 01/29/2013 COSI Associate to give her PhD dissertation. Ginni Grover,
a graduate student at the Electrical, Computer and Energy Engineering
Department with Prof. Rafael Piestun's group, will defend her PhD
thesis. The talk will take place in the ECEE Conference Room (EE1B55)
on January 29 and the title of her presentation will be
"Computational-optical microscopy for 3D biological imaging beyond the
diffraction limit". 01/19/2013 New COSI Trainee. Starting in the 2012 Fall semester, Physics graduate student Angel Martinez will be joining the COSI-IGERT as a trainee. Angel's current research in Professor Ivan Smayliuk's group is in the field of liquid crystals. Welcome to the program! COSI Trainee was invited to the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting in Physics. Physics graduate student Kathleen Hoogeboom-Pot
was selected by the Department of Energy to be US delegate to the
2012 Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting in Physics that was held in July
2012 in Lindau, Germany. COSI Trainee graduated. On Friday May 18 2012, COSI Fellow Dan Kaslovsky, an Applied Math student working with Prof. François Meyer, succesfully defended his PhD thesis: "Geometric Sparsity in High Dimension". The Second COSI Industrial Advisory Board Meeting and the First COSI Retreat, was held together on March 25 and 26 in Breckenridge, CO. One more COSI Trainee graduated. On Tuesday February 7 2012, COSI Fellow Sean Quirin
successfully defended his PhD thesis: "Quantitative Optical Imaging and
Sensing by Joint Design of Point Spread Functions and Estimation
Algorithms". Margaret Murnane, a Distinguished Professor at the Physics Department and one of the COSI-IEGRT co-PI, has been chosen by President Obama to be
chairwoman of the President’s Committee on the National Medal of
Science. Click here to read the announcement published by the University of Colorado. Research by COSI fellow Sean Quirin, former COSI associate Prasanna Pavani, and
